Woodturning Courses

Courses by Sue Harker (RPT) or Graham Harker (RPT)

Woodturning courses with Sue or Graham take place in the workshop on our premises which is equipped with everything you will need.
They are run in a relaxed and informal manner. Refreshments are available.

The courses are held on a one-to-one basis.

Standard Couses are: - Beginner, Refresher, Improver and Intermediate courses to suit your individual requirements

Beginners Course

Full day course covers: -
. An introduction to Workshop Health and Safety
. Basic tool requirements
Tool sharpening
  Mounting and turning a bowl
Turning between centres (if time permits)
  Sanding and finishing

Half day course covers: -
. An introduction to Workshop Health and Safety
  Basic tool requirements
  Tool Sharpening
Either - Bowl turning or Turning between centres
Sanding and finishing

Open Segment turning course (Sue only)

A minimum of 1 full day is required, depending on your ability

The course covers: -
  Workshop Health and safety. Tool sharpening. Timber choice and preparation
Measuring and cutting the segments
Gluing the blanks for turning using my open segment wheel
The turning of a bowl, vase or lidded pot.
Sanding and finishing

Involuted turning (Inside Out turning) or Back to Back Course (Sue only)

A minimum of 1 day is required, depending on your ability.

The course covers: -
Workshop Health and Safety. Tool Sharpening. Timber choice and preparation
Gluing – including paper glue joints
Mounting the timber on the lathe
  Turning the various combinations of timber orientations to create
an open ended or closed inside-out section
Sanding and finishing

Course Fees

Half day £75 Full Day £130 Two days £250
Open Segment and Inside Out course £150 per day.
Half Day 10am- 1pm or 1pm - 4pm
Full Day 10am - 4pm

Courses by David Lowe (RPT)

David is currently not taking bookings for courses.

All tuition is held in a modern well equipped workshop (within our premises) in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

Courses are held on a one to one basis (group bookings can be taken if arranged in advance)


Basic beginners woodturning course half or full day.

Decorative techniques course half or full day (basic or intermediate level)

Hollowing techniques full day only (intermediate to advanced level)

All beginners courses include

 Workshop health and safety covered throughout the day

 Correct choice and use of tools

 Tool sharpening

Mounting and turning a bowl

Turning between centres (except on half days)

Finishing techniques

Courses can also be individually tailored to suit your requirements.

Everything is supplied for your woodturning experience (except your lunch)
Drink refreshments are supplied.

Course Fees

All courses start at £75 for a half day or £135 for a full day.

Courses by Philip Greenwood (RPT)

Philip is based at Greenwood Crafts of Hutton-le-Hole, North Yorkshire.
Philip offers remote online training and advise on any aspect of woodturning. This can be the type of woodturning equipment you need to buy if you are looking to start woodturning, or to help with a woodturning problem. Many problems can be easily sorted out this way without the traveling time involved with attending a physical course. The online courses are one to one. This can be from 30 minutes to 2 hour and will cost £18 per hour. Contact Philip for availability and more details. He will arrange a suitable time to run the course. Woodturning Courses at Philips workshop will be starting again in July.
Philip’s courses are tailored to the needs of the individual whether you want to try woodturning to see if it is something you may want to pursue further, no experience needed, or if you already have experience and just want to brush up on your techniques or expand your skills, he can tailor the course to suit.
He can give independent advice on different lathes that are on the market, and how they vary and which ones might be the right choice for you.
Philip can also help you with your tool selection, 6 basic tools is all you need to start woodturning. He can show you how to sharpen your tools to get the best from them. 
He can discuss the best choice of wood for different projects. He will look at workshop safety, dust control, lighting and heating for a workshop.

Course Fees
Half day course
A  3 hour course to suit your needs. This can be what equipment is needed to sorting out a turning problem.

1 Day course £165
This can be an introduction to woodturning, looking at the equipment and tools you need. The day course can also be tailored to sort out any problems you may have. Learn to turn a bowl or a spindle. You will make one item to take home.

2 Day course £300
This will lead on from the first day, learning more techniques, and time to produce more items to take home with you.

Courses are run one to one unless you wish to bring a partner or friend, a discount will be available.
Half day 9.30am to 12.30 or 1.30pm – 4.30pm The cost of the course will include: a book about woodturning, the materials used and refreshments.
Full day courses will run from 9:30am – 4:30pm.  The cost of the course will include: a book about woodturning, the materials used, refreshments and a light lunch.
The date will be arranged with the student, and are available weekdays and weekends
